Park City

Weather

Very cold, clear skies. Clouded over around noon, but the clouds passed.

Conditions

Excellent.

Story of the Day

Up at around 7:15 and the weather looks cloudier than previous days. We still hadn't decided where we were going as we go down for breakfast. We eventually decided to head for Park City. As we drove up I-80 the sun came out. The outside temperature dropped to 1°F as we passed the entrance to The Canyons. It was slightly warmer at the Park City Resort Center.

I started with a run up Eagle and down Temptation to the bottom of King Can lift. The lift ride and most of run was in the sun, so the temperature was tolerable.

09:19 Set up for racing

The bottom of King Consolidated is definitely in the shade and very cold. The sun is trying to peep out over the top of the ridge in places. The top of the ridge is in the sun. A deserted freshly groomed run overcame the lack of sun, so I headed down Sitka, Broadway and Hot Spot back to the bottom of the lift.

Back at the bottom of the lift, the temperature was showing 12°F.

Back at the top of King Consolidated I took King Con face to the bottom of Silverlode and then Mid Mountain Meadows. After a very cold ride on McConkeys , I arrived at the top of the bowl and decided to take Sunrise down. Although pretty steep, especially at the top, it was perfectly groomed.

Back on McConkeys the sun is a little higher, but still very cold. Another run down Sunrise but this time, the lure of McConkey's Bowl  proved too great. The moguls were soft and forgiving but there were a lot of them and I missed the first run-out so went further down the bowl than I intended. OK but hard on the legs.

10:33 Pioneer lift through the trees

Back at the top of McConkeys , this time I turned left and took the Tycoon cruise down the ridge and the easy Georgeanna run via  to the bottom. It was time for coffee, so a gentle ride up Pioneer and then a quick run down Homerun, Silver Queen and Waterfall brought me to the Resort Center where I met Sue.

After a fifteen minute break, I headed back up to the summit area via Pay Day and Bonanza.

It looked like the weather forecast was right. By 11:50am, the clouds and the winds were starting to build up. I took two runs back down to the bottom on Bonanza lift, the first via Belmont, the second on Muckers before heading down Jonesey's and Mid-Mountain Meadows to the refurbished restrooms in the refurbished Mid Mountain Lodge and then to the bottom of McConkeys. The clouds has passed and sunshine returned but there were more clouds on the horizon.

There were few people skiing. I had a six-pack to myself. The chair in front was empty and the chair being was empty. A combination of the impact of the Film Festival, lunchtime and the cold. From the top of the lift, I turned right down the steep top portion of Sunrise and then on to the moguls of Buckeye. This time I found the right run-out onto Woodside.

Back at the top of McConkeys  I took a gentle cruise down Georgeanna.

Plenty of recovery time on the 25 year old Pioneer chair. I managed two runs down to the bottom of Silverlode before it was time to call it a day, one down Mel's Alley and one down Prospector. I finished with the moguls on Crescent and that was enough for the day and time for lunch.
